María Santos-Sainz holds a Ph.D. degree in Information and Communication Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. She is Professor of Journalism at the Institute of Journalism of Bordeaux Aquitaine of the Michel de Montaigne University of Bordeaux, since 2006. President of the CEJER, the association of “Journalism Researchers from Accredited Schools”. She is author of several books, including: L’élite journalistique et son pouvoir (“The journalistic elite and its power”), (Éditions Apogée, 2006) and El poder de la élite periodística (“The power of the journalistic elite”) (Fragua, 2003). Before teaching, she was the editor of Diario 16 newspaper and the editor-in-chief of Españoles en el Mundo magazine, and collaborated in various French and Spanish publications like Cambio 16 and Fígaro Magazine.

Dr. Santos-Sainz has participated in various research works, including:
- Los estereotipos de género en los medios de referencia europeos ("Gender stereotypes in the main European media"), in Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación social hacia la sociedad del conocimiento (“Information and communication technologies towards the knowledge society”), directed by Lucia Hinojosa-Cordova, from the Autonomous University of New Mexico, 2011.

- Stéréotypes de genre dans les médias : de la majorité invisible aux archétypes anachroniques (“Gender stereotypes in the media: from the invisible majority to the anachronistic archetypes”), in Femmes et Médias, Médias de femmes (“Women and the media, women’s media”), directed by Valérie Lootvoet, Bruxelles, Collection: Pensées feministes, Edition Université des Femmes, Bruxelles, 2010.

- La omnipresencia mediática de la élite periodística.Nuevas perspectivas en la era digital (“The media omnipresence of the journalistic elite. New perspectives in the digital age”) in Transformaciones de la radio y la televisión en Europa (“Transformations in radio and television in Europe”), directed by Carmen Peñafiel-Saiz, published by the University of the Basque Country, Bilbao, 2007, p. 189-195.

Her research interests focus on the press and power relations, the quality press, the journalistic elite, the opinion journalism, and gender and the media.
