José Carlos Rueda Laffond earned his PhD in Contemporary History and in Journalism from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and today he is Senior Lecturer at the same University, in the History of Social Communication Department.

He teaches courses about History of Communication, Contemporary History o Culture, Film and Television Studies, as part of PhD Programs. He was awarded with special mentions in teaching excellence in Docentia Program.

He has been Visiting Professor at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Faculty of Humanities), Universita degli Studi di Firenze (Facoltà di Scienze Politiche), Université catholique de Louvain (Faculté de Philosophie, Arts et Lettres), Université libre de Bruxelles (Faculté de Philosophie et Lettres) and Universiteit Gent (Faculteit Letteren in Wiljsbegeerte).

His works has been recognized by the CNEAI (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación of Spain). He is assessor in the areas of knowledge of Social Sciences and Humanities in ANEP (Spanish Agency of Evaluation and Prospective). He informs in committees of several scientific journals.

He is collaborator in various groups and networks of national and international researchers. His interests are focused on the relationship between communication and history, and, specifically, in:

- Analysis of narrative strategies and practices in historical discourse on TV and film.
- History of communication and cultural history.
- History of television and political culture.
- Connections between national identities, media and memory.

José Carlos Rueda Laffond is principal researcher in the following projects: “La mirada televisiva. Evocación histórica y representación de la cultura política en España, 1977-2007” (Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid-Universidad Complutense), and “El relato histórico televisivo: narrativas, representaciones culturales y proyecciones identitarias” (Project Proext-MICINN, National Plan of Investigation, Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación).

He has published several papers in journals indexed, like Historia Crítica, Alpha. Artes, Letras y Filosofía,Hispania, Comunicación y Sociedad (Universidad de Navarra), Arbor, Goya, Historia y Comunicación Social or Historia Social. He also has published in other journals, as HmiC. Història Moderna i Contemporània, Historia ContemporáneaBulletin d´Histoire Contemporaine de l´Espagne (CNRS), Ànalisi: Quaderns de Comunicació i Cultura and Semata. Ciencias Sociais e Humanidades.

José Carlos Rueda has participated in numerous conferences, and in the committee of the first international congress “Prensa y periodismo especializado (historia y realidad actual)” (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Asociación de la Prensa de Guadalajara, 2001), and in the International Research Seminar “National Identities and its Television Representation” (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación of Spain, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, The Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 2009).

José Carlos Rueda Laffond is author of several monographs, including: La mirada televisiva. Ficción y representación histórica en España (Madrid, Fragua, 2009), Introducción a la historia de la comunicación social (Barcelona, Ariel, 2001), Imágenes y palabras. Medios de comunicación y públicos contemporáneos (Madrid, Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas, 2005), and La televisión en España, 1956-2006: política, consumo y cultura televisiva (Madrid, Fragua, 2006). He has been editor of Ver Cine. Los públicos cinematográficos en el siglo XX (Madrid, Rialp, 2002), and Cine, público y cultura. La dimensión social del entretenimiento cinematográfico (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2003).

He was a researcher of the Fundación Caja de Madrid and in the Economic History Program, at the Fundación Empresa Pública (Ministerio de Industria of Spain). He was part of teams of Historia de la Edición en España, 1836-1936 (Madrid, Marcial Pons, 2001), Historia de España de Menéndez Pidal, vol. XXXIII (Madrid, Espasa-Calpe, 1997), or Enciclopedia Madrid. Siglo XX (Madrid, Ayuntamiento, 2003). 

He was the coordinator in the specialized course “Realización de guiones audiovisuales históricos” (Universidad Complutense de Madrid). He collaborates regularly in courses with the theme of fiction and documentary as teaching tools, and in other media, with contributions focusing on analysis and criticism about TV and popular culture.
